Shopify Store Guide
Image optimization, recommended sizes, and product page strategies for Shopify stores.
Shopify Image Best Practices
Shopify gives you more creative freedom than Amazon. There are no strict white-background requirements. But the quality bar is just as high -- your product images are the primary driver of purchase decisions on your own store.
Recommended Image Sizes
| Use Case | Recommended Size | Notes | |----------|-----------------|-------| | Product images | 2048 x 2048 px | Square works best for consistency | | Collection thumbnails | 1024 x 1024 px | Keep consistent across collections | | Hero/banner images | 1920 x 1080 px | Crop from lifestyle shots | | Social sharing | 1200 x 630 px | Used for Open Graph/Twitter cards |
Shopify automatically generates multiple sizes from your uploads, so uploading at high resolution ensures crisp display on all devices including Retina screens.
Product Page Image Strategy
Unlike Amazon, Shopify does not have numbered slots. Your customers scroll through a gallery on the product page. Here is a recommended image order:
Primary Gallery (3-5 images)
- Clean Main -- even without Amazon's requirement, a clean product shot works best as the first image. It is what appears in collection pages and search results.
- Lifestyle Scene -- show the product in a realistic setting. This helps customers visualize it in their own life.
- Feature Infographic -- highlight key selling points. Shopify shoppers tend to skim rather than read bullet points.
- Detail Close-Up or Multi-Angle View -- build confidence in quality and completeness.
- In Use or How to Use -- demonstrate the product in action.
Optional (if your product warrants it)
- What's Included -- for kits, bundles, or products with accessories.
- Size Comparison -- for items where scale is ambiguous in photos.
- Before & After -- for products with visible results.
Collection Consistency
One of the biggest visual mistakes on Shopify stores is inconsistent product photography across collections. When thumbnails on a collection page have different lighting, backgrounds, and styles, the store looks unprofessional.
ProdVue solves this with Brand Profiles. Set up your profile once, and every product in your catalog gets images with the same visual style.
Tips for Collection Pages
- Use the same image type (Clean Main) as the collection thumbnail for every product.
- Keep aspect ratios consistent -- square (1:1) is the safest choice.
- Generate all collection thumbnails in a batch for maximum visual consistency.
Theme Compatibility
ProdVue images work with any Shopify theme. A few things to keep in mind:
- Square images (1:1) work with the widest range of themes. Most themes crop non-square images unpredictably.
- Landscape images work well for hero sections and banners. Crop a Lifestyle Scene to 16:9 for a compelling hero image.
- White-background images look best on themes with white or light product pages. For dark themes, Lifestyle Scenes often work better as the primary image.
SEO Tips for Shopify Images
- File names matter. Name your image files descriptively before uploading:

- Compress wisely. Shopify compresses images automatically, but uploading a 10MB file is unnecessary. Aim for 500KB-2MB per image at high resolution.
Getting Started with Shopify
- Set up a Brand Profile so your entire store looks cohesive.
- Generate a Clean Main for every product -- use these as collection thumbnails.
- Add 2-4 additional images per product (Lifestyle, Infographic, Detail Close-Up).
- Upload to Shopify and add alt text to each image.
- Preview your collection page to verify consistency.
